Momma always said...

pic01741I don't know what it is about being a mother that makes you become like your own mother and every other mother in the world. I've seen some of these sayings on the net and realized my mother has said them, and so have I at some point or another. Some of them I haven't said only because I havent gotten the opportunity or haven't gotten to that point.

Here are some classics:
"If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." - probably one of my favorites, and I repeat it to my daughters as often as I can

"Will you jump off the cliff just because everyone else is doing it?" - peer pressure is ageless, so until children start getting born with built in sense of self, this will always be said in one form or another.

"Do unto others...." - it's the golden rule, and very much a cliche' too, but it's in every mother's collection of sayings.

Put on your sweater... you're making me cold ~ ahmmm....if she's cold shouldn't she be the one putting the sweater on? My grandmother still tells me this everytime I go out of the house, even in the height of summer.

Don't make those faces! Your face will freeze like that - If this was true, my eyes would be perpetually looking up at the sky.

Wear clean underwear in case you get into an accident - well, my mom never said in case of accident, but she did always say wear clean underwear. This one I still follow, btw. Just in case you're curious.

If that was a snake it would have bit you! - and when did you ever see a snake before it bit you?

Did you flush? Followed by…Did you wash your hands? - this one is already coming back to haunt me. Every time I come out of the bathroom, this is what The Clone says.

Close your legs…I can see China - not in those exact words, but if had a dollar everytime my mom, my grandma and aunts said this to me, I'd be rich by now.

There are a lot of food related mommy sayings probably because most families gather at the table most often.

"Eat your vegetables!" - this is usually delivered in a tone intended to incite fear or accompanied by a bribe.

"Clean your plate, children are starving in [insert your choice of third world country here]" - and I'm sure you've offered to ship off your leftovers to China, India, or Africa. My mother always mentions the Philippines.

Don't put that in your mouth; you don't know where it's been - hmmmmmm......ok, I won't go there. lol!!

And the all time classic of them all,

Because I'm the Mom, that's why!"

"Eat your vegetables!" This one I never heard from my mom. Maybe, because back there we have to eat what we have on the table, otherwise, we'd be hungry; or being Ilocano we instinctively love veggies. LOL
