It's a Small World

Call it the Golden Rule, Karma or whatever... Grandma's advice about 'doing unto others' and 'things coming back to haunt you' has plenty of truth in it. Just look at the funny video below.

Dispose of water bottles

Today, as I mentioned before, is earth day, but everyday not just today, we try to be environmentally conscious as much as we can. One of the things we've started doing, which is also a big savings on our budget, is to stop buying bottled water. We all bring our lunches for school and we've stopped bringing bottled juices or sodas a long time ago, so it was bottled water for us. But then we realized, as we take containers full of empty plastic bottles out on the sidewalk for recycling, how much plastics we are using up and throwing away!

So my husband installed water filter under our sink and installed bar faucets to dispense the filtered water. From the tap, we can now fill re-usable water bottles for our daily dose of water! Aside from the label on the bottle, we haven't been able to notice a difference in taste, really.

Earth Day Today

Earth Day O7 - Durham3Today is earth day and even though I think everyday should be earth day, did you do anything special today to celebrate or save the earth?

I found it kind of weird that today when I walked in to work, the little marquee in the lobby said that today is jelly bean day. They had free jelly beans and a jar full of jelly beans where you can guess how many it took to fill it up and you get a price. I found it kind of weird because we are supposed to be an environmental advocate and yet earth day seemed to have been totally ignored by the administration. Weird.

As typical of American life, earth day in our town was celebrated over the weekend. This is the first year that we didn't go to the celebration downtown. The photo posted here is from last year's celebration.

A Greener Way to Live

I think there are many out there who are still ignoring a greener way of living. They still live like the environment is an indefinite resource. Well, it only takes one look at our near empty lakes here in N.C. to realize that our resources can be quickly depleted if we are not careful.

Since our city has gone into mandatory water restrictions, I've noticed that more and more people are talking about living a more environmentally friendly lifestyle. Not only are people talking about conserving the water resource, they are also discussing other ways to conserve electricity, generate less trash, and other ways to preserve the environment that we have now.

For instance, one of the things we are installing is a rain barrel to capture rain water for the garden. We have already installed eco friendly shower heads and low flush toilets in order to save water, but there is so much more we could do just around the house. Just start looking around yours too and you'll know what I mean.

If you'd like to get started in making your house a little greener, one of the best places to find eco friendly products is GreenAndMore.com. They offer various products that can reduce your impact on the environment. If you aren't sure where to start, they have a learning center where they cover a spectrum of topics on greener living. They also have a blog where you can read up on various green initiatives going on nationwide, or just maybe interact with other people who are trying to live greener lives. If you have a story to share, the GreenMusings blog is also a good place to go. Once you've gotten ideas on how to get started or where to start first, go back to Green and More to get the products you need.
